As I write this, above the earth Space Shuttle Atlantis is currently serving its final mission ever. With the NASA shuttle program winding down, we begin to see the instantly recognisable beasts take their final flights into the black abyss that is outer space. May 14th marked the launch of Atlantis on its 32nd, and final mission. With it, we move ever closer to the shutting down of NASA’s shuttle missions, with only two left. It’s sad to think that these somewhat cumbersome creations from the 80s will no longer be in service.
One of my favourite sites around, The Big Picture documents the journey from last November’s gentle glide landing to Atlantis’ turn around this week and it’s paradoxically violent firing towards the sky once again. Some great images of a subject that will never bore me. Check it all out here.

It’s no secret that myself and the big T go a bit gooey for anything astronomical. What’s interesting is the amount of effort that goes into capturing images from the deepest realms of the universe. Whilst you could use a multi-billion dollar telescope like Hubble to take a few glamor shots, there are also plenty of amateur astrophotographers around.
Last year Rogelio Bernal Andreo let Wired in on the process he uses to create some amazing shots of nature at work thousands of lightyears away. Check out the article here.
On a more recent note, you may recognise the nebula in this image as the one that we shamelessly use for the blog header (and cards). It’s the Orion Nebula and this particular shot was taken on the new VISTA telescope. What’s even more amazing is the size of the full-resolution file: 341mb!

I’m a little slow to post this but it’s one of my favourite things. Way better than shitty chinese chocolates and lead-based paints. Click the pic to be redirected to the calendar.

I covered this guy’s work on the twizblog, but I thought I’d re-mention it again on the P4000 blog now it’s up and running.

Lego played a huge part in my growing up, these days kids don’t understand the idea of building stuff. They’d rather some robot with guns and swords attached to every limb. Anyway, this fellow Balakov puts a new spin on Lego by adding some great photography skills into the mix.
Check out his photostream on Flickr here.
Taz’s notes: If you ever have like a whole bunch of Lego men lined up staring at you shit is mad creepy, also I credit lego for a lot of fun times as a child and an adult…sad but true.
